When to Use

  • Sub-microsecond accuracy required (financial trading, telecom, scientific instrumentation)
  • Data center environments with PTP-capable switches
  • Network interface must support hardware timestamping (ethtool -T <iface> to check)
  • Often used alongside NTP as fallback (PTP for precision, NTP for coarse sync)
